The Journey

Dr Adam Hill: Data Scientist, Recovering Astrophysicist, and Community Builder.

I am Dr Adam Hill; a technical leader, keynote speaker, and recovering astrophysicist. My career has been defined by bridging the gap between extreme scientific complexity and highly pragmatic, resilient industrial engineering.

Below, you can explore the three major chapters of my journey: from analysing deep-space transients for NASA and ESA, to architecting smart-city infrastructure, and now to deploying generative and agentic AI models that protect international financial systems against crime.

"The greatest risk in AI today isn’t the technology, it is the delta between the boardroom’s expectations and the engineering reality."

The Bridge Philosophy

I specialise in closing that gap, making AI reliable, ethical, and useful.

Phase 1 2002 – 2015

Astrophysics & Space Observatories

Extracting Signal from Extreme Noise

My journey began in the deepest reaches of space. For a decade, I analysed high-energy Galactic transients and X-ray binaries using data from NASA’s Fermi and ESA’s INTEGRAL space telescopes, culminating in a body of work including the co-discovery of the first-ever detection of gamma-ray emission from a nova—a result that made the NASA Fermi press room. This was a masterclass in handling petabyte-scale, highly volatile data structures and extracting signal from extreme noise, which became the absolute cornerstone of my approach to modern data science.

Phase 2 2015 – 2022

Smart Cities & ML Infrastructure

From Observatory to Urban Architect

I moved from the space observatory to the 'smart city' at HAL24K, where I spent eight years leading high-performing data science teams. We architected machine learning systems for urban infrastructure, designed scalable real-time telemetry pipelines, and successfully spun out four autonomous ventures. This era was where I learned that the most brilliant machine learning model is useless if it cannot be robustly deployed, monitored, and maintained.

Securing Financial Systems with Agentic AI

Today, as a Staff Data Scientist at ComplyAdvantage, I focus on the technical strategy required to combat global financial crime. Following a significant tenure as Interim Director of Data Science, where I directed the division through a period of rapid generative AI evolution, I now drive the high-level architectural choices that allow us to identify global fraud networks at scale using Agentic AI. Throughout my career, I have stepped into the role of the technical expert in the room, guiding strategic discussions to ensure boardroom expectations are grounded in engineering reality.

Core Questions Driving My Work

  • Resilience at Scale: How do we build observable, resilient AI and data systems that don't just work in a lab, but thrive at true enterprise scale?

  • Transferable Wisdom: What can high-energy astrophysics—the study of the most volatile data in the universe—teach us about processing distributed, real-time data on Earth?

  • Governance & Autonomy: How do we securely govern autonomous, agentic workflows in production environments without stifling innovation?
